Marlies Schoenmakers (1961, Eindhoven, the Netherlands – residing in Curaçao)

Growing up in the Netherlands with its straight lines, organized landscape and equal lifestyle, moving to the island of Curaçao in 1995 was the best thing she ever did. She immediately fell in love with the Caribbean atmosphere.

Nature, with its soft flowing lines, is her greatest source of inspiration. The shapes of shells, the waves of the sea, the gentle blowing of the Eastern trade winds through the trees and plants. The variety in flora and fauna. It inspires her endlessly and she transforms these subtle natural shapes into ceramic sculptures.

The line is the beginning of everything. Time and again Marlies tries to capture the sensuality of a form or a stilled motion in her work. In order not to create any distraction or whatsoever, the objects in most cases retain their natural coloring. Only rarely will an object be covered with a thin layer of engobe or glaze, so that nothing will draw the attention away from the suppleness of form and line.
